This is a weird piece of urban art near our flat... do the hills actually have eyes?!?

One Less Turbine in The House.

Honestly, there's not much I can say for this week.

Don't get me wrong- it was my birthday, recently, and if I didn't publicly thank those who celebrated with me, I would feel ungrateful. Despite having to work and take care of stuff (AKA being a responsible human), it was a good day, and I'm very grateful to my family and friends.

Easily the most eventful thing to happen last week was something that should've happened awhile ago, now. Until recently, I've been using a large cluster of space on my Synology for nothing, while using a Dell SAN to backup my data. When it hit me that I don't need both of these appliances sitting there taking up electricity, I realized this was my chance to decommission that old R510! I had but two virtual machines running on there, and it's probably not what you'd expect for a device acting primarily as my SAN- on the obvious hand, I had a secondary Windows server, running backup scripts for my database-obvious enough; but my other VM was my router and firewall. Not sure why I ever put it on that host, but thankfully, moving it off was easy enough. Perhaps the trickiest part was the Windows server- because not only was it my backups, but it was also a domain controller and my camera server. With trouble exporting the VM, I finally had to give up and commission a new DC, and just copy come configs over.

But MAN do I have to say, having one less loud server sitting in my rack is a godsend. You might wonder why, if it's off in my server rack in my data closet- surely it isn't that much of a bother, right? Well, if I had a proper house, maybe not. But I live in an apartment... and not only is it a closet where I have to leave the door open for ventilation, but it's the utility closet right in the main part of the flat- so it's a turbine running constantly in the background of everything. Imagine having an air conditioner running ALL THE TIME. It's worse.

And God bless my wife for enduring it. I'm blessed with a wonderful woman who not only has patience for my odd obsessions and hobbies, but is a very gifted, smart individual, herself. Together, we make an awesome team.

And that's really all I have this week. Until next time, see ya! server gone
